DIVAS
DIVAS
A new theatre work by Laura Neill with musical selections ranging from Purcell to Puccini. Produced in collaboration with DIVA Museum
June 21-30, 2018
Boston Center for the Arts Plaza Theatre
DIVAS is a world premiere play with opera music that finds nine great opera divas from across three centuries locked together in the afterlife, pitted against each other to fight for the soul of opera. Packed with incredible true stories, sumptuous fashion, and gorgeous music, DIVAS is a hilarious and poignant showcase of larger-than-life women whose voices reverberate across the centuries. Inspired by divas’ extraordinary contributions to music, fashion, and the political and economic progress of women as the first career women in the West, DIVAS asks: what is the power of opera? Can women harness it to new ends?

"DIVAS: Exploring Female Representation in Opera"
What does “diva” mean to you? The sopranos of OperaHub's upcoming show DIVAS present a musical program featuring 400 years of glorious prima donna repertoire. Singing show selections as well as other arias, they will also identify some problems of being a diva--including the limited character types that sopranos have played historically--and illustrate how OperaHub and DIVAS are looking to disrupt expectations and shape soprano repertoire into the future.

ARIA CONTEST
An earlier vision for the DIVAS project called for contrasting the diva stories with modern day women in positions of power and prestige. With the wealth of diva information, we decided to narrow our focus for this show. Below is information about the competition we ran for arias for these modern female characters.
